So Metal Cards look good–we know that. But why else would you want one? Here’s a little more about them and their benefits.
What is a Metal Card?
Well firstly, they’re metal! Often made from titanium or stainless steel, they’re strong and long-lasting with less chance of snapping or fading.
Metal Cards are usually part of a paid plan which comes with additional benefits alongside the card. Most Metal Cards offered by the big banks in Canada are credit cards which means you need to be eligible to get one. Though you can get a Metal prepaid Mastercard with KOHO! More on that later.
Are Metal Cards worth it?
If you’re trying to weigh up the pros and cons, here are the key differences between metal and plastic cards.
Metal Cards | Plastic Cards | |
---|---|---|
Appearance | Sleek with a glossy finish that makes them feel exclusive. Be prepared for conversation when you take it out to pay! And the metallic surface is embossed with your details and a logo which add to its luxurious look. | More commonly issued by banks and financial institutions. Flexible in terms of design and customisation–they can be printed in bright colours with detailed graphics and personalised information. |
Durability | Made from titanium, stainless steel or a combination of metal alloys, the strong material can withstand everyday use. No bending or breaking here. It’s a long lasting credit card, debit card or prepaid card. | Made from PVC or other synthetic materials, they withstand typical wear and tear, but are not as durable as metal. Plastic can scratch, fade or break more easily. |
Feel | Metal is heavier than plastic. This is where you really feel the difference! The weight is one of the reasons it feels so premium and unique. | Plastic is light and flexible which makes it easy to carry and handle during payments. |
Account benefits | Metal Cards are usually on the highest fee account with the best benefits. These perks often include high cash back and interest rates, complimentary airport lounge access, concierge services and dedicated customer support. They’re a premium card with premium benefits. | Everyone gets a Plastic Card on any account. They’re on lower fee accounts and are for a broader customer base. They also offer rewards like cash back, travel miles, discounts and warranty protection. These tend to be lower than the rewards with Metal Cards. |

How can I get a Metal Card?
In Canada, the big banks only offer Metal in the form of credit cards, usually on the most expensive plans. So if you want one the traditional way, you have to have a high salary and a good credit score.
Here’s how you get a Metal Card with one of the big banks:
Find the card that suits your needs. Compare fees, features, interest rates and rewards
Check if you’re eligible. You must:
Be a Canadian resident with enough credit history.
Be “age of majority” in your province or territory.
Have a credit score of at least 660.
Have a yearly income of around $150,000 for an individual or $200,000 for a household.
Fill out an application. Do this online or in person and wait to find out if you’ve been approved.
Want something different to the big banks? The KOHO Metal Card is a prepaid Mastercard–so you don’t need to be eligible for a credit card to get one. You can use Metal for your everyday spending, while saving and building all in one place.
